The Moran Prizes 2012

The Moran prizes are an amazing annual competition, divided in three different sections, the Doug Moran Portraiture Prize, Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize and the Contemporary Schools Prize. Open only to Australian artists this competition continues to promote and encourage the development of portrait photography and art here in Australia. With categories from Primary Years through to the Open Category it’s an amazing competition.

Previous local photographers such as Dan O’Day – This Way Winner Contemporary (2010),  Christine Pobke – Alone (2010), Vikky Wilkes (2010) and Katie Kolenberg (2012) have all participated in the Moran Prizes.

While we have missed the opportunity this year, I cannot help but think that the some of the awesome imagery produced by my students this year should have been entered. I think back to the various images produced through the portraits of admiration to our self portraits, how wonderfully insightful, honest and touching so many of  them were. The following link looks at some of the semi-finalists from Years 9&10 this year. You’ll need to click the Years 9 & 10 link underneath the gallery. Moran Prizes – Years 7-12.

So for those students who will have moved on next year, make sure you watch out for Moran details so that you can enter next year. I look forward to seeing your images on their website and perhaps one of you winning?!

This year the $100 000 photographic prize has been split between 4 photographers Kelsey Austin Walsh, Tobias Titz, Ashleigh Bradley and Jacqui Stockdale. Each recieving $25 000.

For those students that came to Sydney at the end of last term we were lucky to go and look at the Photos1440 exhibition at the National Library. The winners have been announced and some of the photographs are brilliant. Have a look. Photos1440 Challenge – Winners
